Whether supplying materials, technical expertise, manpower or all three, we’re proud to make a difference through our partnerships with local organizations.

Earth Rangers

CRH Canada is proud to partner with Earth Rangers to educate youth about the aggregate industry, enhance awareness of biodiversity, and support conservation initiatives across Canada. In addition to assisting with construction of the Earth Rangers Centre (ERC) and habitat rehabilitation at our sites, we also support the Bring Back the Wild (BBtW) program to educate children and their families about the importance of biodiversity and inspire them to become directly involved in protecting animals and their habitats.

What is Earth Rangers?

Earth Rangers is an award-winning, non-profit organization focused on communicating a positive, science-based message to children on the importance of protecting biodiversity. Through their live shows, online community, television presence and the Bring Back the Wild program, they educate over a million children a year about the importance of biodiversity.

To participate, children log on to where they can learn about the different projects for that year and select the specific animal they would like to help protect.

A material contribution

We are proud to have contributed materials to the construction of the Earth Rangers Centre (ERC), which is certified Platinum under LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for existing buildings (EB), after having received LEED Gold certification for new construction in 2004.

"We are extremely honoured to receive LEED Platinum Certification for the Earth Rangers Centre. This achievement would not have been possible without the incredible support of our partners and sponsors; who like us, believe in the importance of protecting biodiversity for our future generations. We are proud to share this certification with them.”

Earth Tubes

The centre is a showcase for leading-edge sustainable building technologies that reduce energy, water and resource consumption, while also maintaining the highest levels of functionality and comfort for occupants and tenants.

Achieving a score of 92 of a possible 110 points in the rating system, the Earth Rangers Centre is one of the highest scoring LEED EB building in Canada. The centre features technologies such as:

  • Solar photovoltaic generation
  • On-site wastewater treatment
  • Earth tubes (see below)
  • Solar hot water
  • Stormwater control
  • Geothermal heating and cooling
  • Vegetated green roofs

Earth tubes are a passive technology that enables the use of existing ground source energy to support heating and cooling needs. At the ERC, these concrete tubes bring outside air into the system and then run underground, allowing the temperature of the surrounding ground to moderate the temperature of the air before it enters the building, raising or lowering temperatures of incoming air up to 15ºC.

In the winter the ground is warmer than the outside air - this warms the concrete tube, which in turn warms the air as it passes through the earth tubes feature. In the summer the temperature of the ground is cooler than outside air, meaning that the tubes cool the air before it enters the building.

Flying high

Earth Rangers and CRH Canada work together to ensure the habitat rehabilitation work taking place at our sites across Ontario and Québec continues to be of the highest quality for migratory song birds and other species. Over the years, we have collaborated with Earth Rangers to preserve the habitats of the following:

  • Wood thrush
  • Barn swallow
  • Bobow link
  • Peregrine falcon

Experts that work with Earth Rangers on their conservation and restoration projects will also provide input for our biodiversity strategy, rehabilitation work and environmental monitoring. Using the expert guidance of Earth Rangers personnel, CRH Canada can exercise methods to improve and better manage the natural and rehabilitated portions of our properties.
